SketchUp

Turning a 2D layout into a massing model a client can actually see — blocks on a site, heights tested against regulation, shadows at 10am in December. The visualisation half of consultancy work, where AutoCAD stops.

What you will be able to answer

A client wants to see three density options for a site before the layout is fixed, and all that exists is the AutoCAD plan. What do you show them?

The DWG imported at checked units and used as the base, plot footprints extruded to the floor counts each option assumes, with repeated buildings as components so changing one type updates every copy rather than requiring forty edits. Whether the massing means anything depends on it being modelled to real dimensions and read back against the height, setback and floor-area figures permitted on that site — a massing that ignores them compares options that could not be built. Saved scenes and a shadow study at a stated location, date and time are what make the three comparable, and regenerable when the layout changes.

Selection criteria

  • Teaches one concept end to end, without needing the rest of the video
  • Speaker does this work, or teaches it to people who will
  • Transfers to Indian practice, or is marked where it does not
  • Audio and screen legible on a phone, on mobile data

What was rejected

11 candidates did not meet the course criteria.

  • This lesson covers navigation and axes but ends before demonstrating any drawing tools or actual 3D drawing.
  • Does not demonstrate extruding from a 2D floorplan outline or assigning a specific numerical height to the extrusion.
  • is organic or curved-surface modelling (Subdivision, Artisan)
  • places geometry approximately with no accuracy mechanism at all
  • mentions grouping without showing the sticky-geometry problem it solves
  • Models a single detailed building rather than a site of blocks; or is architectural interior or facade detailing; or is a rendering showcase with no massing logic
  • This video is a general technical tutorial on SketchUp's material and texture tools, rather than a guide on using materials to make massing models readable or communicate building uses.
  • is interior material and finish selection
  • turns shadows on for appearance with no date, time or location set
  • is ENTIRELY about interior daylighting rather than how a building shades its surroundings
  • turns shadows on for appearance with no date, time or location set
