Report & technical writing

Turn planning evidence into a report that a client, government officer, researcher or funding partner can use. This skill begins with the reader and decision, builds a traceable argument from maps, tables, field evidence and secondary sources, and finishes with conclusions, recommendations and an executive summary. It teaches the communication layer, not the underlying survey, GIS, statistics, policy-analysis or DPR-production methods.

What you will be able to answer

A planning consultancy gives you a Terms of Reference, survey notes, stakeholder comments, GIS maps, secondary datasets and a rough chapter template for a municipal mobility study. What can you produce before the client review?

A decision-ready draft with a one-page reader-and-question brief, a numbered outline tied back to the Terms of Reference, and a source trail showing where each important claim, map and number came from. Each section leads with a finding, supports it with evidence, explains the implication and states the limitation that changes how confidently it can be used. Maps and tables have informative titles, units, geography, period and source notes and are interpreted in the prose rather than left to speak for themselves. The conclusion answers the original question without introducing new evidence. Recommendations state the action, responsible actor, evidence basis, sequence or timing and the constraint or trade-off the client must manage. A concise executive summary carries the question, method, main findings, caveats and decisions up front.

Selection criteria

  • Teaches a report-writing operation through a worked outline, paragraph, evidence trail, figure, recommendation or summary
  • Connects every important claim to evidence and separates observed findings from interpretation, conclusion and recommendation
  • Writes for a named reader and decision rather than for an abstract academic examiner
  • Keeps methods, limitations, uncertainty and source provenance visible enough for another planner to audit the reasoning
  • Produces concise, plain-language technical writing without flattening necessary planning terminology

What was rejected

15 candidates did not meet the course criteria.

  • Audio contains noticeable echo and background noise from the classroom setting.
  • Presents a high-level conceptual overview using text slides and TTS narration without working through a concrete report drafting example or scope boundaries.
  • This video focuses on finding alternative sources (podcasts, documentaries, videos) rather than establishing a traceability system for claims and evidence in a draft.
  • is plagiarism or reference-manager setup with no report claim being traced
  • Discusses paragraph construction and critical synthesis abstractly with whiteboard diagrams rather than writing or revising an actual sample paragraph with specific text.
  • Focuses primarily on procedural SPSS execution and basic APA reporting templates rather than critical boundaries or limitations of statistical findings.
  • This video focuses on R and ggplot2 programming rather than teaching analytical report writing, context-setting, or caveats.
  • Presents high-level general advice without demonstrating an actual worked example or report excerpt.
  • The video is a general guide to writing a dissertation results section and only mentions tables and figures in passing for a few seconds without demonstrating how to format, label, or integrate them into narrative prose.
  • Focuses strictly on academic paper conclusion sections rather than distinguishing findings, conclusions, and recommendations in a report context.
  • teaches a conclusion as a generic recap
  • The video focuses on writing the entire discussion section rather than crafting detailed, actionable recommendations.
  • This video is a sponsored demonstration of an AI research writing tool rather than a lesson on formulating structured, actionable recommendations.
  • The video merely recites basic bullet points from a technical writing textbook without demonstrating or building an executive summary from an actual report.
  • Is a business-plan pitch, resume summary or academic abstract only

Where this skill is used

Planning Academic / Researcher

Teaching and research at planning schools (SPAs, CEPT, planning departments) or research institutes (NIUA, WRI, CPR), entered via a master's + NET and/or PhD. Rare for a fresh B.Plan — it requires a master's minimum and is a multi-year route.

TCPO / MoHUA Planner

A planner in the central Town and Country Planning Organisation (TCPO) or Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA), working on national urban policy, guidelines (URDPFI) and central missions. Rare for a fresh B.Plan — central posts can accept B.Plan / B.Arch plus experience or AITP membership through UPSC routes, but an M.Plan is highly preferred; freshers more often enter as project/research associates.

Development / Multilateral Sector

Planner-economist roles at multilaterals and development organisations (UN-Habitat, World Bank, ADB, GIZ, WRI, C40) working on urban policy, climate and infrastructure programs, in India or abroad. Rare for a fresh B.Plan directly — usually a master's + experience; freshers enter via internships and research-associate roles at India offices.

State Town Planner

A salaried planner inside a state Town & Country Planning department. You prepare and scrutinise master plans and development plans, process layout and zoning approvals, and enforce planning regulations. Entered via a state Public Service Commission (PSC) exam — the single most accessible government entry for a fresh B.Plan.

Planning Consultant (Urban/Regional)

A planner at a consultancy producing master plans, development plans, DPRs and urban studies for government and private clients. This is the largest private employer of planners and the default private path — B.Plan alone is enough to start, and software skills gate hiring rather than a licence.
